Hiring a painter isn’t a huge decision compared to buying a house or renovating a kitchen, but get it wrong and you’re looking at a job that needs redoing within a few years, or worse, a dispute over work that was never finished properly. A bit of homework upfront saves a lot of hassle later. Here’s what’s actually worth checking before you commit.
Check They’re Licensed for the Job
In NSW, any residential painting work valued at more than $5,000 in labour and materials legally requires the contractor to hold a current contractor licence. This isn’t a formality, it’s a legal requirement, and it also determines whether you have access to consumer protections if something goes wrong.
You can check any NSW licence for free using the Service NSW licence check tool. Just search the business name or licence number and confirm it’s current and covers painting work. Any legitimate painter should be happy to give you their licence number without being asked twice, and ours is on every page of our website for exactly that reason (357454C).
Confirm They’re Insured
Licensing covers the legal right to do the work. Insurance covers what happens if something goes wrong while they’re doing it, whether that’s accidental damage to your property or an injury on site. Ask to see a current certificate of currency for public liability insurance before work starts, not after. A painter with nothing to hide will have this ready to send over without any fuss.
Ask About Experience, Not Just Years in Business
Years of trading is a reasonable starting point, but it’s worth digging a little deeper. Has the painter worked on homes similar to yours, in terms of age, materials and size? Do they understand the specific challenges of painting on the Central Coast, salt air, coastal humidity and the way exterior paint wears faster near the water, or are they applying the same approach regardless of location? Local experience tends to show up in the details: the right preparation, the right products for the conditions, and realistic expectations about how long the job will actually take.
Get a Detailed, Written Quote
A proper quote should spell out exactly what’s included: surface preparation, number of coats, the specific paint product and brand being used, and a rough timeline. Vague quotes that just say “paint house, $X” make it hard to compare between painters and even harder to hold anyone to a standard once the job’s underway. If two quotes come back with a big price gap, the detail in each one usually explains why, whether that’s corners being cut on prep, a cheaper paint product, or simply a more accurate read of what the job actually needs.
Ask to See Examples of Past Work
Photos of completed jobs tell you more than a sales pitch ever will. Ask to see examples of work similar to yours, a weatherboard exterior if that’s what you’ve got, or an interior repaint if that’s the job. Pay attention to the details in the photos: straight cut-in lines around trims, consistent finish across large wall sections, and tidy work around windows and fixtures. These small things are usually a reliable indicator of how carefully a painter approaches preparation, which matters far more to the finished result than most people expect.
Communication Before the Job Starts
How a painter handles the quote process tells you a lot about how they’ll handle the job itself. Do they respond to enquiries promptly? Do they answer your questions clearly, or brush past anything that sounds complicated? A painter who’s upfront and easy to reach before you’ve even signed off on anything is generally a good sign of what to expect once the job is underway.
Watch for Red Flags
A few things are worth treating as warning signs rather than minor quirks. Be cautious of anyone asking for a large deposit upfront, especially a full payment before any work has started. Be wary of a painter who can’t or won’t provide a licence number when asked, or who has no fixed business address or ABN you can look up. And if a quote comes in dramatically lower than everyone else’s with no clear explanation, it’s worth asking exactly what’s being left out to hit that price.
